James Dignan - Art 2009

Last updated March 20th 2010

His christian name was Mr. Earl
Acrylic/canvas. 51 x 61cm (20 x 24 in).
January 2009.

Part of the continuing series of portraits for my fifth solo exhibition in May 2009. Like most of the pictures for this exhibition it is "driftnetted" - picked at semi-random from photographs found on the web, then altered significantly and painted. If I remember correctly, this one came from a website of wanted criminals in the US. The title is from a line in a Paul Simon song.

Kelly Anne
Acrylic/canvas. 61 x 75 (24 x 30 in).
March 2009.

The first of two or three slightly larger portraits for my May exhibition. Another "driftnetted" picture, the title is an oblique reference to the font Kelly Ann Gothic.

Leon
Acrylic/canvas. 51 x 61cm (20 x 24 in).
March 2009.

Another "driftnetted" picture, of a sportsman (a Cuban boxer, if I remember correctly).

The unguarded moment
Acrylic/canvas. 61 x 75 (24 x 30 in).
April 2009.

Another of the slightly larger portraits for my May exhibition. Another "driftnetted" picture.

This is not your dream II: Cynthia mask
Acrylic/canvas. 51 x 61cm (20 x 24 in).
April 2009.

A companion piece to 2005's This is not your dream. Another driftnetted picture - this time of a morphed composite face rather than one specific individual.

Rosalinda's eyes
Acrylic/canvas. 61 x 75 (24 x 30 in).
May 2009.

The third of the slightly larger portraits for my May exhibition. Another "driftnetted" picture.

Tuatara 5 on green (Endangered species)
Acrylic/canvas. 23 x 31 (9 x 12 in).
July 2009.

A close up of an old New Zealand five cent coin.

Night street
Acrylic/canvas. 30 x 41 (12 x 16 in).
November 2009.

Driftnetted picture of a shadowy figure on a town street at night.
