An attempt to capture the loneliness of an old man walking through the autumnal city centre, as groups of teenagers idle in the sunshine nearby. The picture was painted from a photograph taken only a handful of metres from the one which became Watching the wheels.

A "mood piece" - an ethereal view of a piece of sculpture in central Dunedin (only a few metres from the scene painted in Look both ways, above).

West Coast church.
Acrylic/canvas. 33 x 24 cm (13 x 9 1/2 in).
July 2004.
Sold.

A small church seen on my travels around the South Island in... where? Westport? Motueka? Somehow the feel of the building - and the finished painting - were more tropical colonial, and the resulting painting looks more like the Philippines or Mexico than New Zealand.

Melancholia.
Acrylic/canvas. 60 x 50 cm (23 1/2 x 19 1/2 in).
August 2004.

Another driftnetted tone separation, this time placed within an abstract 'spattered' frame.

Details same as for Melancholia.

Carnival of monsters.

A few months ago, Dunedin played host to a touring exhibition of dinosaur skeletons from China. I took several photographs of the exhibition, one of which formed the basis for this painting.

Transition zone 1: Dowling Street steps.
Acrylic/canvas. 46 x 30 cm (18 x 12 in).
September 2004.

I've always been interested with transition zones - those areas which people pass without seeing them between their points of departure and arrival. The Dowling Street steps in Dunedin is one such transition zone.

After-work party.
