James Dignan - Art 2003

Last updated September 26th 2007

Salamander (Sally Amanda)
Acrylic/canvas. 50 x 60 cm (19 1/2 x 23 1/2 in).
January 2003.

Details similar to Ottavia (in fact, the original image was on the same website!).

Original Cynthia
Acrylic/canvas. 30 x 30 cm (12 x 12 in).
February 2003.
Sold.

Originally entitled Lenore, the current title is also that of one of my songs. Another picture found on the web, I've no idea who this original Cyn is.

Landscape with Palms
Acrylic/canvas. 36 x 45 cm (14 x 17 1/2 in).
March 2003.
Sold.

A prominent building in the heart of Dunedin's arts district, on the corner of Dowling Street and Queen's Gardens (one of Dunedin's top galleries is located in a building at the right of this view, and two others are just out of frame). It is a popular area for painting for me - Awaiting eternity and At the crossroads both show places within 100 metres of this building. The title, which suggests a tropical beach scene, is a Dunedin in-joke - the ground floor occupant of the main building in this picture is Palms Restaurant.

The two watchers
Acrylic/canvas. 36 x 45 cm (14 x 17 1/2 in).
March 2003.
Sold.

In Dunedin's city centre (the Octagon) sits a statue of the Scottish poet Robert Burns, who was related to one of the city's founding fathers. This picture shows the statue, along with a man sitting on one of the seats that circle the base of the statue (the statue and man are, of course, the two watchers).
The Dunedin City Council runs a webcam which looks across the "Robbie" statue and the Octagon: external link.

An exact science
Acrylic/canvas. 33 x 24 cm (13 x 9 1/2 in).
March 2003.

"Driftnetted" from a news service website, this picture of an anonymous scientist in his lab has been somewhat distorted to produce "An exact science".

Lucretia my reflection
Acrylic/canvas. 60 x 50 cm (23 1/2 x 19 1/2 in).
April 2003.

Another driftnetting, similar to Salamander and Ottavia.

New dawn fades
Acrylic/canvas. 45 x 28 cm (17 1/2 x 11 in).
April 2003.

A more experimental picture of the early morning sun over Otago Harbour.

Sara @
Acrylic/canvas. 100 x 80 cm (39 1/2 x 31 1/2 in). May 2003.
Sold.

Another driftnetted work, and my largest painting to date.

Sympathy for the Devil
Acrylic/canvas. 60 x 50 cm (23 1/2 x 19 1/2 in).
June 2003.

Driftnetted, but more complex than a lot of other recent works. (The title is merely a nod to the Rolling Stones).

Closed door I: J.S.S
Acrylic and woodstain/wooden door. 46 x 65 cm (18 x 25 1/2 in).
July 2003.

Not quite as good as having a picture in the Louvre, but still... I saw a pair of old louvred cupboard doors in a building recycling shop, and thought they’d be perfect for painting on. The "closed door" of the title refers to the fact that the young woman painted is an ex-girlfriend from many years past.

The promise of shadows
Acrylic/canvas. 50 x 60 cm (19 1/2 x 23 1/2 in)
August 2003.

Yet another driftnetted picture.

Walküre
Acrylic/canvas. 50 x 60 cm (19 1/2 x 23 1/2 in).
August 2003.

Yet another driftnetted picture - an unusually high-key one. Goths make great subjects for paintings!

Indication
Acrylic and Vermiculite/canvas. 51 x 40 cm (20 x 15 1/2 in).
August 2003.

Driftnetted. A heavily textured picture, using both brush and palette knife and embedding Vermiculite (an insulation material with the texture of oat flakes) within the paint. The colours (green, white, saffron and deep blue) and the title reflect the subject, a group of young Indian women.

Wednesday morning, 3 a.m.
Acrylic/canvas. 60 x 50 cm (23 1/2 x 19 1/2 in).
October 2003.

Driftnetted again - a young woman partying into the small hours of the morning (title from a Simon and Garfunkel album)

Through the trees and across the harbour
Acrylic/canvas. 30 x 30 cm (12 x 12 in).
October 2003.
Sold.

A view from Broad Bay on the Otago Peninsula, looking across the harbour towards St. Leonards.

Visions of Johanna
Acrylic/canvas. 51 x 41 cm (20 x 16 in).
November 2003.
Sold.

Another driftnetted picture, this time with a title courtesy of Bob Dylan.

Dunedin skyline - ESTAB
Acrylic/canvas. 9 x 6 cm (3 1/2 x 2 1/2 in).
December 2003.
Sold.

An attempt at using tone-separation techniques on a miniature painting, with a view of building tops in Dowling Street, Dunedin.

Dunedin skyline - The Exchange
Acrylic/canvas. 6 x 9 cm (2 1/2 x 3 1/2 in).
December 2003.
Sold.

Painted at the same time as Dunedin skyline - ESTAB, and in the same miniature size. The view is of buildings in the exchange area of Dunedin, a recurring subject for my paintings.
